Sculpture Park Planting Design

By Wild Edge Garden Design

Thank you for taking the time to explore this planting display at the Cheltenham Art Fair, held at Cheltenham Racecourse.

This installation has been designed to complement the sculptural work of Malcolm West, creating a natural setting that enhances the form and presence of the piece within it.

The naturalistic style of planting has been carefully considered to feel both contemporary and connected to the artwork, using a palette of plants chosen for their structure and seasonal interest. The aim is to show how planting can soften, frame and elevate sculptural elements within a garden setting.

ABOUT THE PLANTING

This planting scheme focuses on a balance of texture, colour, form and movement. Planting is layered to create contrast and depth, allowing the sculpture to sit comfortably within the space rather than feeling placed upon it. The plants used here are suitable for a garden setting and can be adapted to different spaces, whether you’re looking to introduce a focal point, refresh a border, or create a more cohesive planting scheme.

The choice of plants is limited with plants repeated through the planting display to create a cohesive display with maximum impact. This is a useful technique that you can easily replicate in a garden setting.

Planting in groups and repeating plants through a garden border draws your eye through the space. Accent plants are used (in this instance the Cirsium) to create a focal point and pull the planting scheme together.

More structural plants such as the evergreen Hebe act as a central plant that all the other plants revolve around.

In this planting scheme the star of the show is of course the sculpture by Malcolm West. This beautiful artwork of a solitary dancer creates a sense of movement and grace which I've mimicked with the use of soft grasses (Autumn moor grass) complimented by elegant foliage and a splash of bright colour added by the Cirsium flowers.

Art in a garden setting creates a strong focal point and adds another layer of interest to your garden. Thoughtful placing of the plants that sit around a sculpture will further enhance the piece.

A garden sculpture can be used to create a strong focal or view point from a seating area or path. It can cause the garden visitor to pause and contemplate or can serve to entice them to another part of the garden.

We hope you enjoyed all the beautiful art works in the Cheltenham Fresh Art Fair Sculpture Park and that you enjoyed the planting which sits around this stunning piece of art by sculptor and artist Malcolm West.

The plants used in this planting scheme are listed below. The full planting list can be downloaded here.
